Horror Trailer- Penance
The trailer starts with an all black screen and in the background you can hear the diegetic sound of someone's voice. The voice has a quiet and eerie tone to it which instantly sets a scary atmosphere to the rest of the trailer. As the speaking continues images are flashing up on the screen of what is clearly the man who is speaking's daughter. Then we all of a sudden see the man who is on the receiving end of the phone call. He is shown through a close up. This is an effective shot to use as we are able to see his facial expression. However the stereotype of the typical villain is subverted because he doesn't look scary but like an average, unharmful person. Also the man says he doesn't want any money in return for his daughter so it could suggest to the audience that there is something more to the story than just a kidnapping. The young girl then speaks up and says 'Don't send me back to him'. This then puts the audience on edge because now all the want to find out is what is going on for a young girl not want to be returned to her dad. During this part of the trailer is going on there is non- diegetic music being played in the background. This music is low and scary which puts the audience even more on edge because it makes the whole scene scarier. Whilst the first part of the trailer is being shown this music is playing and gradually getting louder and louder. Then all of a sudden it stops and a new type of non- diegetic music begins to play. This new non diegetic music is creepy rather than scary. As it sounds like a young girl is singing it perhaps makes the audience believe it is the little girl singing which makes them curious as to why she is sounding so creepy and if there is a secret to why she does not want to be returned to her father. The young girl is then shown speaking to a woman and she is saying 'I like it here, I can hear everyone so clearly'. The woman then responds with quite a frightened and worried look as if she has no idea what the girl is going on about. This again makes the audience wonder what is going on as the trailer so far has left so many unanswered questions for them. For the next 20 seconds of the trailer we hear no speaking from the characters. We just hear the creepy non- diegetic music playing and we see numerous images flash up on screen. This would make the audience focus entirely on what is being shown to them. Also, because they are images from a number of different scenes it would make the audience curious as to what is going on.
Then we see a man walk up to the girl and say 'It's time to come home'. We would then suspect that man to be her dad. However by the look on his face, which seems worried, the audience may wonder if there's something going on. Then the camera switches to the girl and she seems to be crying, however the audience cannot be sure whether this is out of fear or not. She then lift a gun to her mouth as if to kill herself. Then the screen goes black and we hear a scream however there is no picture to see for a few seconds until the picture of the girl comes up, still screaming, with blood pouring from a bandage around her eyes. Then the trailer seems as if its coming to an end as the music has come to an end and the title flashes up but then right before the end a loud, high pitched noise begins to play and we see various images of the girl, covered in blood holding an extremely creepy looking doll. This would perhaps really frighten the audience as it was very unexpected.
