Friday The 13th Film Poster Anlaysis

The background of the poster is dark suggesting the film has got a sinister atmosphere. This will make the audience aware that the film poster is for a horror film. In the centre of the poster we see a dark figure. Their face is covered by a mask which could put the audience on edge as they will not know who the murderer is because their identity is hidden. This could also suggest that the villain pictured in the poster is unknown to the victims. In the villains hand is a weapon. This perhaps suggests that they are on a murderous rampage. From this, the audience can then establish that this person we see on the poster is the definitely villain in the film.
The title of the film 'Friday The 13th' is written in red. This connotes blood and gore. Also as the background is black the red title stands out and is eye catching to the audience.
From this poster we can also see that the villain is standing in dark woods. This suggests to the audience that the setting for the film is based here. This may make them more interested in the film because most successful horror films are located in the woods or other isolated locations like this to create a scarier atmosphere. This is due to the fact that the victims will be alone.

Documenting Of Influences

In our clip we used a vast amount of extreme (high and low) and dynamic camera angles because of the enticement it can bring to our target audience. There were many reasons which influenced us to make the decision to choose horror as the genre for our film. In our trailer we used a multitude of camera angles but primarily used angles such as wide angle and mid shots on a good quality go pro camera. Firstly you see the group walking towards the camera which is panning backwards which is one of the most acquired/generic shots in horror films. After distributing a questionnaire around , the results showed that the majority of the people wanted us to do a horror film. This influenced us to stick by our idea of the genre being horror. After looking in more detail at the codes and conventions of horror films we analysed what shots and atmosphere to create in our film trailer i.e. extensive use of long and mid shots to emphasise the sinisterism of our film, some film examples used was cabin in the woods and Friday the 13th. We were influenced to use ideas from the horror films because using the correct sounds and music, you can Create a very effective film trailer as horror films have a very distinctive atmosphere which can be easily emphasised by sinister music and sounds.

Consideration of representation and stereotyping

The usual stereotypes of a villain are male, sinister, mysterious, unknown identity, dangerous and powerful. In our film the villain will be mysterious and he will have an unknown identity. This means that the audience will feel eerie and it will put them on edge because they will not know who the killer is which creates even more suspense.  We will also represent the villain as sinister as the victims will not expect anything to happen to them. This, again, is conforming to the stereotype of villains being dangerous and mysterious. The female victim is conforming to the stereotype as women being weak and vulnerable. This is because she has no idea what is about to happen, it could represent her as quite ditsy and unaware. This then conforms to the stereotype of women being much more vulnerable and perhaps a bit clueless. We have not subverted the stereotype of women in any way as we have only conformed to the stereotype. We have not subverted the stereotype because in our trailer we needed to get straight to the point and allow the audience to understand and make a judgement as to who the victims are in the film. The point in this is it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats as they may try and guess what will happen. We have left an element of surprise because we are not showing whether all of the victims get murdered, we only show a few scenes in which two of the characters have come into contact with the murderer. This is so the audience will have something to continue watching it for- they will want to know who dies and who the murderer is.  However, we have two victims, one being a girl and the other being a boy. The boy victim is conforming to the stereotype of a victim but is also subverting the stereotype of a boy being strong and powerful. The boy is conforming to the stereotype of a victim because he was unaware of the events that were about to take place which shows he is very vulnerable and also perhaps a bit ditsy because he hasn't even realised that he is being watched by the murderer. However he is subverting the stereotype of boys being strong and powerful because he is the victim in all this and even though he had no idea that he was going to be murdered he could of perhaps tried to fight off the murderer.

Own Film Treatment

Directed by Cory Nelson, Connor Moreton, Ryan Eastman and Rachel Herring

Synopsis

A group of friends take a trip and decide to go camping in the woods but then strange events occur and the characters find themselves being picked off one by one by an unknown killer. The group then have to stay calm and survive the terror they face while also trying to understand the events that are taking place. We have many digetic noises to alert the characters and create the suspense for the audience. All the directors (Cory Nelson, Connor Moreton, Ryan Eastman and Rachel Herring) are also starring in this incredible horror film which is certain to get the audience gripping their seats with its terrifying scenes and tension filled suspense.

Codes and Conventions

The codes and conventions of our film include jump-scares, tension filled scenes and fast paced. The trailer involves many frightening scenes which will create many enigmas and keep the audience gripping onto their seats. It also involves the typical conventions of a horror film with the main characters in peril are going to be the weak, vulnerable girls, conforming to the stereotype that women are seen as weak and powerless. Another convention of our film is that we are going to have the characters running from the unknown in order to survive, but the trailer will end with every character being shown to be in danger-this will keep the audience hooked as they will not know who lives or dies until they see the full film. Lastly our trailer will end with a girl running, with no digetic or non digetic sound, through the woods, terrified and alone and then a scream will be heard and the titles will appear.

Costume Research

Slasher movies consist of specific costume choices as the antagonist usually wears a mask to hide his identity-which creates the message of fear the unknown. The antagonist also usually wears dark clothing, mainly black, to enhance the fear of the character and make them look more sinister. These are the typical conventions of costumes in horror movies and are usually followed. Films that have used these conventions are Friday the 13th, Halloween and Scream. All of these movies were very successful and we hope to adopt their style, of following the codes and conventions, for our film.

The protagonist is usually female in horror movies; the audience are more likely to accept a female as the victim as it conforms to the stereotype that men are strong and brave whereas women are weak and vulnerable. The protagonist usually wears casual clothing and appears to be sophisticated as she solves the puzzles and avoids the unknown killer.

The female protagonist wears unrevealing clothing whereas the other female characters wear more provocative clothing to suggest to the audience that they are easy to get and an easy target for the antagonist. The provocative clothing usually consists of miniskirts and low cut tops.

The other characters are usually a few guys, around 2 or 3, who all have different personalities. The main guy, who is usually to die first, is the jock-this is the character the audience do not appeal to as he objectifies women and conforms to the typical stereotype of a jock. The other guys are more appealing to the audience with one of them being the love interest for the main female protagonist and the other being the character who the audience like but who unfortunately dies. The jock usually wears a sports jacket or football jersey to show that they are active, whereas the other characters wear casual clothing, such as jeans and t-shits, to relate with the audience.

Questionnaire Results

Question 1

This result shows us that our main audience prefers the horror genre compared to the other genres. This will be the genre we use as it is what the audience want.

Question 2

This result shows that our audience watch horror movies but not that regularly but it is still the most preferred genre so we will most likely create a horror movie.

Question 3

This result shows that our audience mainly associate a horror movie with a setting as our own home-this is a little formulaic and does not suit the idea of our film so we may use the woods as our location as it links more to our idea.

Question 4

This result shows that our audience prefer a mix of gender so we will include 3 guys and 2 girls.

Question 5

This result shows that our audience expect many features from the codes and conventions of a horror movie.

Question 6

This shows that our audience will like to see an ending with the girl surviving which is the same as many horror movies.

Codes and Conventions of a Horror film

The typical conventions of a horror film is that there are clear binary oppositions. We are conforming to this convention because in our trailer we make it clear that there our victims and villains. We also conform to the dominant representation of gender. For example, we have a male villain and a female victim. We also use a range of shots including high angle,  low angle, and close up shots to also represent dominance. For example when the villain is shown we use low angle shots to make him seem more dominant and powerful and when we show the victim we use high angle shots to portray her as weak and vulnerable. This is a typical convention of a horror film. We have also conformed to the convention of teenage characters. The point in this is that is that the audience will be more scared for the victims as they are only young. Also the teenage audience will be able to relate to the film and to the characters as they will be more scared for the characters as they are the same age as them. We also use a hand held camera for parts of the trailer. The point in this is that we can see what the characters are experiencing from their point of view. This may make the audience feel more like a part of the film as they can see exactly what the characters can see. Another convention we adhere to is the usual associations with a horror film. For example we adhere to one of the typical locations of a horror film. The setting for our film is an isolated house. This is effective because it makes the film more sinister and creates a scary atmosphere for the film. The target audience for a typical horror film is usually ages from 15-25. So, as we have included characters ranging in between those ages we are aiming at our target audience. Also, as we have included a female victim we will be attracting a large male audience because they will be attracted to the female victim.

Target Audience Research

After collecting various secondary research I can conclude that horror films are mainly aimed at people aged 15-35, specifically men. The target audience usually involve teenagers who are mostly curios and daring. This is because most horror films involve unknowing, immature teenagers as the main protagonists. This means that our film will perhaps have a wide target audience because the main characters shown in our trailer are teenagers as the main protagonists. Research shows that both genders are interested in horror films but males do actually enjoy it more because there is lots of violence and terror. However this certain aspect of the target audience research does not link with our film because we are not including lots of violence and terror. There is not a huge amount of violence shown on screen and only minimal amounts of terror. Research also shows that horror films are aimed at teenagers and young adults who want an adrenaline rush from being fearful of something/someone. The fact that the main characters in our film are teenagers could mean that our target audience will be more interested in our film because they can relate to the characters. Also, men are usually more interested in a horror film if there is a women victim. This means that because are film trailer involves a woman victim it could entice a bigger audience as we are involving things that the audience are interested in. Our trailers genre is horror and it is based in a woodland area meaning that our film would follow other films with the same characteristics such as "Cabin In The Woods", "The Blair Witch Project" and "Mama". As all of these films are set in one particular location instead of various locations like "Saw" the audience are able to get a more depth concept of what the characters are feeling.

Soundtrack Research

Non- Copyright Music:

Non-copyright music is music which has not been copyrighted. This means that the music can be used and recorded without permission from the composer. Most of the lyrics in the song are copyrighted by the writer of the song. This is why you cannot make copies of a CD you have bought for example.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXOs3xQYBlM

This is a You Tube clip of various horror sound effects. These sound effects will come in extremely helpful in our film because we needs lots of sound effects to add emphasis to the particularly scary scenes. After carefully looking at what we need to do in order to make sure we can legally use this clip we had to follow a number of steps. We had to subscribe, like and favourite the clip. We also have to link to the users channel in the description of our film. This means that there is no charge for using the clips which is a good thing because we don't want to have to pay for any sort of background music in our film.
In particular, the good things about this You Tube clip are that it includes lots of various sound effects. They are of different volume and different speed. This is a good thing because it means we can fit the music to the speed of our film, also known as match on action. This will then make our film more scary for the audience because it means when the scary scenes are shown, the music will emphasise the scariness of it which will therefore have a greater effect on the audience.

Sound Online Tutorial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0IFprHpSaA

This sound online tutorial demonstrated to us how to get perfectly balanced audio throughout our film.
From watching this sound tutorial it has made us aware of the problems we will face when it comes to editing our film. The tutorial explains how to use various different sounds in one clip. For example, non-diegetic sounds, diegetic sounds and a narrator. In our film we will be including non- diegetic sounds and diegetic sounds, so this tutorial will help us a great deal when it comes to editing our film. The tutorial explains that when you use two different types of sounds in one clip, one sounds will overrule the other meaning that you will only be able to hear one of the sounds. For example in our film because we are including non -diegetic sounds and diegetic sounds it means that the audience may only be able to hear one of the sounds. This therefore means that our film will not be very good because we have not effectively edited our film to ensure the audio for our film has been perfectly balanced. However, after watching this tutorial we now know exactly what we need to do in order to balance our audio. The tutorial showed us exactly how to balance each of the different types of sounds we will be using to make sure the audience can hear each of the different sounds in proportion. It showed us how to increase or decrease the volume of each of the sounds. This is very helpful because in our film we will be using the non- diegetic sound of music which will play in the background and the diegetic music of our characters talking. We will need to balance both of these sounds to make sure one doesn't overrule the other. For example, the non- diegetic music is most likely to overrule the characters talking because it will be louder and so therefore the audience will not be able to clearly hear the characters talking so it means that perhaps our film will not be very effective to the audience because they will be trying to hear what the characters are saying but they won't be able to hear them.
So, after watching this tutorial on how to edit sounds we are now confident that we will be able to successfully edit our film on Premiere Elements 10 unlike before when we had no idea on how to edit sound. This therefore means that when it comes to editing our film we will be able to get on straight away and do it because we know exactly what we are doing so we won't have to experiment too much to try and work out how to do it because we already know how to do it.

Magazine Cover Analyis- Entertainment

The title of the magazine 'Entertainment' is covered partly by the main image of the magazine. Like the other magazine covers, this seems to be fairly common. This is clearly because the magazine is so well known it does not need to make it 100 per cent visible. The title is bright yellow which stands out against the background. The background is not very dark, it is a light grey colour. This still makes the title visible because it is an extremely bright colour against a fairly light background. The main image of the magazine is of two people who are characters from a film. They are posing as their characters rather than themselves. This allows the audience to relate to them and they will feel more likely to go and watch the film because they are getting a glimpse of the characters and what is going on. We can tell that these are characters from the film because of what they are wearing, their facial expressions and their body language. The female in the picture is wearing trousers with what looks like some sort of weapon tucked into the pockets of them. She also has a very serious look on her face. This could lead the audience to believe that she is dangerous. This again leads the audience to wonder what the film is about and also may make them more likely to go and watch the film. The heading 'Divergent' is written across the top of the image on the cover. The effectiveness of this is that it will make the audience aware of this.

Institution Research- Lionsgate

Lionsgate is the largest and most successful mini-major film studio in North America. It has distributed various commercially successful films including The Twilight Saga (partially), The Hunger Games, Saw and The Expendables. Lionsgate have created films that are mostly the Drama, Action, horror and Thriller genre. Lionsgate have created quite a few horror films, some being very successful and some being not as successful. Some of the horror films they have created are, Saw 3D, Saw 1-6, The Punisher, Alone in the Dark, House of 1000 Corpses, Undead, The Devil's Rejects, Hostel, The Haunting in Connecticut, The Cabin in the Woods, The Possession, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, Texas Chainsaw 3D, You're Next, The last Exorcism, My Bloody Valentine and The Eye. As Lionsgate have created quite a few horror films we believe that it will be a good institution to use because the genre of our film horror.

Institution Research- 20th Century Fox

20th Century fox was founded on May 31st, 1935 due to the merge of 'Fox Films', founded in 1915, and '20th Century Pictures, Inc, founded in 1933. 20th Century Fox has mainly created family family and comedy genres. Examples of these are Dr. Dolittle, Dr Dolittle 2, Big Momma's House, Big Momma's House 2, Ice Age, Ice Age: The Meltdown, Cheaper by the Dozen, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, Garfield: The Movie, Night at the Museum, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Marley and Me and Aliens in the attic. Some of the films they have created are drama/thrillers but the majority of them are non- scary. Despite the fact that some of the most successful films were created by 20th century fox, such as Avatar and Star wars, we have decided that it is not the most suitable institution to use for our film. We have decided that 20th Century Fox is not the most suitable institution because the genre of our film is a horror. As our film is a horror we have decided to use an institution that has focused more on the horror genre. Despite this, 20th Century Fox has created some horror films, such as Wrong Turn 2, Shutter, taken 2 and Devil's due, which has only recently come out in cinemas. However, we still believe that we should use another institution which focuses more on the horror genre.

Institiution Research- Warner Brothers

Warner Brothers have created a variety of different films in different genres such as comedy, action, horror, romance, adventure and fantasy. Examples of the films they have produced are, Valentines Day, Clash of the Titans, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Sex and the City 2, Inception, Crazy, Stupid, Love, Final Destination 5, Happy Feet 2, New year's eve, The Hobbit: An unexpected journey, The Great Gatsby, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. They are very dedicated in producing a variety of films in different genres. The fact that they create a variety of different genre films show us that Warner Brothers is a potential institution we will use for our film. Some of the successful horror films Warner Brothers have created are Orphan, Sweeney Todd and Friday the 13th. This shows us that they are successful in creating horror films so, therefore, it would be a good institution to use for our horror film.

Institution Research- Universal

Universal Pictures was founded in 1912 but Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley and Jules Brulatour. It is the oldest movie studio in the United States of America and it is also the fourth oldest in the world that is still in a continuous production. Some of the films created by Universal Pictures are Despicable Me, Kick-Ass, Charlie St. Cloud, Bridesmaids, Johnny English Reborn, Despicable Me 2, Kick-Ass 2, Mr Bean's Holiday, Sydney White and The Holiday. Universal Pictures prefer to focus on the Drama, Adventure and Romance genres. Universal have however created some well-known horror films such as The Strangers, Drag me up to hell, Mama and The Purge. Despite this, it is clear that horror isn't their strong point as they prefer to focus on the Romance, Drama and Adventure genres. This means that we do not think Universal is the best institution to use because they have not had that much experience with horror films and as our genre is a horror we think it would be best to use an institution which has had a lot of experience with the horror genre.

Magazine Cover Analysis- Total Film

The title of this magazine is partly covered by the main image on the cover. The fact that the whole title is not visible shows that the magazine is so well known that it is not necessary for the whole name to be shown. What we can see of the title is bright red and this stands out against the black background. The main image of the magazine is of Andrew Garfield. He is not posing as himself though, he is posing as his character, spiderman. This is therefore showing the audience the character rather than the actor. Over the top of the image is the title 'The Amazing Spider-Man'. This is written in fairly big writing which makes it clearly visible to the audience. The words 'The Amazing' are in white writing and the words 'Spider-Man' are in yellow. These both stand out against the background of spiderman. The reason for the two different colours in this heading could be perhaps because it will make the audience pick out the words spider man which relate entirely to the image. Covering the majority of the cover is white line crossing over each other. This is supposed to represent the spider webs that spider-man uses in the films. This gives the audience something else to relate to. There is not much writing around the outside of the cover. This could be because there is more focus on the image rather than text around the outside.

Magazine cover analysis- Empire

The title of this magazine is in bright red writing. It is positioned at the top of the magazine so it is visible to the audience. The effectiveness of the red writing is that it stands out against the dark background. This will make the title very eye- catching and the audience will know exactly what magazine it is. The main picture on the magazine is of Daniel Radcliffe. However, instead of posing as himself, he is posing as Harry Potter. The audience can tell this is Harry Potter due to the fact he is wearing the signiture glasses and he has cuts all over his face. Also, because of the dark, grey backfround it makes the magazine cover seem more sinister which could entise the audience even more. This links with the text around the outside of the cover. It says 'Harry comes out fighting'. This therefore links with the picture because from the audiences point of view it seems as though Harry has been involved in a fight of some sort due to the blood and scratches all over his face. However, due to his facial expression it seems as though Harry has not lost the fight and he has 'come back fighting' like the magazine states. The effectiveness of linking the picture to the text around it is that the audience can make assumptions about the film and it will make them want to go and watch the film. Also this particular bit of text is the only bit of text on that specific side of the cover. This means that the audience are more likely to take notice of the text and read it. The rest of the writing around the cover is mainly in white or yellow. This also stands out against the dark background. It doesn't stand out as much from the writing on the other side of the page as it is all bunched up on one side. However it still looks effective and it is still noticable to the audience.

Magazine Cover Analysis- Glamour

The background of the magazine cover is white all over and most of the writing is either black or pink. This is effective because it means the writing stands out. The title of the magazine 'Glamour' is written in pink. This is a good colour choice because pink is a glamourous colour. Cheryl Cole is standing right in the middle of the magazine cover. Her head is covering a letter of the title which again suggests that the whole title doesn't need to be visible for people to recognise the magazine. Like the last magazine the model is wearing a similar colour top to the background. This however is effective because it makes the cover seem more sophisticated. Also because Cheryl Cole is very well known it will make the cover more appealing to audiences.

Magazine Cover Analysis- Vogue

This magazine cover shows Kristen Stewart taking up most of the magazine cover. She is covering up most of the name. The fact she is covering up most of the name shows that it is such a well known magazine that they don't need to show the whole name. The background is white and some of the writing is also white. This seems like an ineffective thing to do seeing as it would be unlikely that white writing would stand out against a white background. However it does seem to stand out because it is a whiter white. The model in the middle of the cover is also wearing a white top. This still stands out and it all makes the cover seem classy and sophisticated. The writing around the edge of the cover is either in red, black or white. This all stands out against the white background. The writing is plain which doesn't draw attention away from the model. The magazine cover is fairly plain altogether which makes it easy on the eye to the audience.

Film Poster Analysis- White House Down

The film poster shows The White House up in flames and a man covered in dirt and smoke walking away from it. The man walking away from the burning building is positioned in the center of the film poster. The point in this is that the audience will mainly focus on this. They will also be able to see what is behind and above him. The fact he is walking away from the burning White House could suggest to the audience that he is the one who has burnt it down. This would make the audience curious as to what has gone on and if he is the one who burnt it down why is he walking away unharmed? At the bottom of the poster we see the title of the film 'White House Down'. The title is in white like the other posters, again, to make it stand out against the dark background. At the top of the film poster the names 'Channing Tatum' and 'Jamie Foxx'. These are two well known actors so it is very effective putting their names on the poster because it will make the audience want to come and watch the film because they will want to see these actors. Underneath these names we see the names of three different films made by the same producer and also the producer of the film. The three films shown are well known successful films. The effectiveness of this is that the audience will know what the producer is capable of and also they will assume that the film will be good because they have made successful films before so they will be more inclined to go and watch the film.

Film Poster Analysis- The Purge

The picture on this film poster is of a person wearing a mask. The face is pointing downwards slightly but the eyes are still looking straight ahead. The point in this is that it makes it look even more creepy. This is effective because it makes the audience feel more scared and they will believe the film is perhaps very scary. We can clearly see that the person is wearing a mask because we can see half of their eye and underneath it. The point in this is that we can ask ourselves why someone is wearing a mask and whether they are trying to hide their identity. This leaves the audience suspicious as to what happens in the film. It will also make them want to go and watch the film so it can answer all of their questions. In the middle of the film poster at the side is the title 'The Purge'. The title is in white so it stands out against the dark background. The font is simple so it doesn't take away any of the focus from the rest of the poster. The title is also in bold compared to the smaller writing above and underneath it. Above the title reads 'One night a year, all crime is legal...'. This is giving the audience an idea of what the film is about. This can then link back to the picture. The person may be hiding behind the mask so his or her identity is not revealed once 'The Purge' is over. Underneath the title reads 'Survive the night May 31st'. This is the date in which the film is released into the cinemas, but not only this the poster is making it seem like that is the day of the purge so it will make more people want to go and watch the film on the release date. At the top of the poster in small, white writing it says 'From the producer of Paranormal Activity and Sinister'. The two films stated on the poster are both well known horror films. They are known to be extremely scary. So knowing that the film has been produced by the same people may make the audience more inclined to go and watch the film because they know that the producers can make good horror films.

Film Poster Analysis- Altered Perception

This film poster is quite simple and the title links entirely with the picture on the cover. The picture is an extreme close up of a woman's face. Just on the side of her face we can see a hand pressed up against it as if to hold it still. The hand is wearing a surgical glove so could show that it is a doctor holding her face still. A needle is also present on the poster. We can see a fairly dark, yellow liquid in it which matches the colour of the woman's eye. This image links with the title 'Altered Perception' because it is as if the liquid being injected into her eye is altering her perception. It also gives the audience an idea about what the film is about. Despite this, it doesn't fully give the audience a full idea of what the film is about. The fact they do not know too much about the film could make them want to go out and watch the film. The title 'Altered Perception' is in plain font which stands out against the dark background. The effectiveness of this plain font is that it doesn't draw attention away from the image on screen. Above this title we see a list of seven names which are characters in the film. The point in putting these names on the poster is so the audience are made awake of the actors in the film and it could make them more inclined to go and watch the film if they know there are some well known actors in the film.

Lucy Film Trailer Analysis

The trailer starts with a close up of a woman's face. She is lying down on a bed and her lip is bleeding. This will instantly make the audience wonder what has happened to her. As she begins to wake up we hear her voice say 'What happened?'. The next scene is a flashback of her in a club dancing. This could the make the audience think that she was drugged as she has no idea what happened and the fact she has woken up with hardly any clothes on. We are then told a story by a man who does not seem very relevant at this point about what has happened. This allows the audience to become awake of the story line and also it will make the rest of the trailer relevant. We then come to a scene in which a man beats up this woman to the extent that the bag of drugs contained in her stomach splits and the drugs get into her bloodstream. We can tell that this drug is very dangerous because from a long shot it looks as if she is having a seizure. Not only this but she has also been thrown to the ceiling which is completely abnormal. This then makes the audience wonder what is in the drug to make her act like this. Suddenly her eye opens and through the extreme close up we can see her eyes change colour a number of times as she blinks. Through a mid shot she then silently gets up and sits on her chair as if nothing has happened. But during the next scene the audience become awake that she is in fact extremely dangerous as she shoots a man without a thought. The next scene shows four men sitting quietly around a table. The woman walks up to them shouts 'Hey' and shoots them all. This would then give the audience the impression that she is dangerous as it seems that she is just killing for no reason now. This is again confirmed in the next scene when she asks two innocent looking men if they speak English. One replies with a simple no and she shoots him dead in an instant. This just shows that she is now just killing because she can. For the next part of the trailer we understand what is going on. We see a man explaining how most human only use about 10 per cent of their brain capacity. This could then lead the audience to believe that the woman is perhaps using more which is why she is unthinkingly committing these crimes. Further into the trailer we are told that the woman has access to 28 per cent of her brain capacity which is 18 per cent more than average humans. This would then lead the audience to understand that the drug has enhanced her access to her brain capacity. We then are shown clips of the film which show her using this extra brain capacity. This includes learning to write in Chinese in the space of an hour and also changing her hair colour and style in seconds. A man then asks what happens when her brain capacity reaches 100 per cent. The remainder of the trailer answers that question. We see her almost using super powers as she is able to stop time and speed it up again. This therefore shows the audience that this could be the result of being able to access 100 per cent of a brains capacity.

Project Almanac film trailer analysis

The first 30 seconds of the trailer show a boy re-watching a video from when he was younger when he discovers something strange. He seems his older self in the video which is impossible. This entices the audience to the trailer because they will obviously want to find out how such a thing is possible. The non- diegetic music at this point is quite upbeat and happy rather than mysterious. This could show the audience that what they are about to discover is a good thing rather than a bad. It is clear that throughout the trailer it is supposed to look like it is self filmed. This can be made obvious by the way the characters occasionally look directly at the camera. The fact it is self filmed will make the audience feel more involved with the film as it seems like they are actually experiencing what they are experiencing. We see various close ups of some sort of machine the boy and his friends have found. When they work out its a time travelling machine that his dad was working on we can see that they all cannot believe it. They then decide they should make it because it is made clear that they have already made it if he was in his baby video.
For over half of the trailer we can see that they are taking advantage of being able to time travel by winning the lottery for example. To the audience and to them it seems like harmless fun. The non- diegetic music at this point is upbeat which could again make the audience believe that it it simply just a bit of fun. However, the music suddenly comes to a stop and the music changes to quite fast paced and low. This is when it becomes clear that what they are doing is having an effect on everyone else. We see various close ups of them looking carefully at newspaper articles of disasters that have happened because of what they have been doing. One particular over the shoulder shot shows the boy reading the newspaper and we can see the headline 'Plane Crash 77 killed'. This therefore allows the audience to fully understand the extent to what they have caused. For the rest of the trailer we see a mixture of shots from the bad things that are happening now and the good things that happened whilst they were time travelling. The effectiveness of this is that it allows the audience to realise that this must be a hard decision for them to make because it would mean reversing all the good stuff that has happened even if it risks their own lives.

If I Stay Film Trailer Analysis

The trailer begins with an extreme long shot of what looks like someone auditioning for something in a huge theater. The theater is completely empty apart from three figures you can make out just in front of the stage. The audience can tell just how empty it is as you can hear the diegetic sounds of footsteps of the girl auditioning. The next shot is a long shot but this time it is from behind the girl auditioning. From this shot we can see the three judges and also all of the empty seats around. We see a close up shot of the girl looking up at the ceiling in the theater. This links back to the scene before in which a boy was explaining to the girl why the ceiling of his bedroom matched the ceiling of the theater- it would not seem so scary on the day. This therefore means that because the girl is looking at the actual ceiling in the theater it could show that she is thinking about what that boy said to her. For the next part of the trailer the girl is explaining how the boy, Adam, is something more than her. The trailer shows him in almost a better light than her. He is seen to be in a band and she is seen to just be at home with her family all the time. This links with the next part of the trailer where her mum says 'She shouldn't be scared to hang out with those guys'. This could suggest that the girl thinks that she is not right for Adam because she is different from him. However, from the next scenes of the trailer we see the girl with Adam a lot and it seems as if they are in a relationship of some sort.
About halfway through the trailer we hear the voice of the girl saying how life can be one thing and then in an instant it can be something else. We then see a close up shot of a car wheel skid on the icy road. Instantly the non- diegetic music changes. It becomes slower and there is a sad tone to it. The next shot we see is a birds eye view of the girl lying on the snow. However her eyes are still open and she does not look hurt in any way so the audience would assume she is unhurt. Despite this we then see a long shot of their car, completely upturned and surrounded by firemen. At this point the girl calls out for her parents and her brother but no one acknowledges her. The audience may not begin to suspect something is wrong. We then see a high angle shot of the girl lying on the ground with paramedics attending to her. She looks lifeless. In this shot however we can still see the girl standing there, over her own lifeless body. We then hear her say 'Am I Dying?'. This would then lead the audience to believe that she is in fact dying or already dead because she is standing over herself. A close up shot is then shown of the girl and a doctor. The doctor is whispering to her how it is all up to her, whether she lives or dies and that she needs to use every bit of fight she still has in her. This links back to the beginning of the trailer where she was explaining how she wasn't really anybody whereas now she needs to be. A close up shot shows the girl who is watching over herself dying that she is almost heartbroken that she can't do anything about it but somehow she has to find out a way to. For the remainder of the trailer we see all the events in her past that are significant to this day. It also goes against what she was saying about being a nobody because the different shots show people who care about her very much which means that she is someone people care about. This would give the audience a slight bit of hope that she will wake up because she will have this new found confidence that all the people who care about her want her back in their lives.

Fury Film Trailer Analysis

The trailer begins with an extreme close up of three army tanks moving along the field. The setting is deserted and the sun is beginning to go down. We then see a long shot of what we believe to be the tanker with soldiers on it. You can't see any of their faces, you can simply only see their outline because of how dark it is. This gives the audience the impression that they are trying to stay hidden so they are only moving during the night. A close up is then shown of a soldier. From his facial expression we can see that he looks quite worried but at the same time extremely focused. A long shot allows the audience to fully understand that some sort of war is going on. This is because we can see shots being fired by soldiers. However we can not hear the diegetic sounds of the gun shots or any of the soldiers. We can just hear the non-diegetic music being played. This music is very low slow paced. This could reflect on what is being shown on screen- a war. We then hear the main character say 'I promised my crew a long time ago I'd keep them alive'. As he is speaking this a series of close up shots of men appear showing the audience who his crew are. Also because he is saying that he will keep them alive it could suggest to the audience that he is the main soldier who has the best chance of keeping himself and others alive. The non- diegetic music then starts to get louder and more fast- paced as the trailer continues. We are then shown a two person mid shot of the main soldier and the new assistant driver for one of the tanks. The effectiveness of this shot is that we can compare both characters and we can see that the new driver is much smaller and skinnier than the other soldier, showing the audience that he is weaker than him. During this shot we hear a series of gun shots fire. The new driver jumps at the sound which shows the audience that perhaps he is not ready to undertake this kind of job. A very slight low angle shot shows the main solider looking down on the new soldier after jumping at the gun shot. He is shaking his head at him. This shows that he perhaps knows that this soldier is going to be no good.
About halfway into the trailer we are shown a fighting scene in which the new soldier is driving the tanker. We see a long shot of an enemy soldier come up from a hole in the ground. We see this through a small slot in the tanker. This shows the audience what the people inside the tanker can see. The new soldier is given  an order to take out the enemy soldier. However he does not shoot straight away and we see a close up shot of him look to his side perhaps because he does not think he can do it. After continuous orders to shoot the enemy soldier he shoots the soldier. A close up shot shows the new soldier crying and holding his hands up to his face. From this the audience can see that perhaps he did not want to kill the enemy and he is not ready to have such responsibilities. Further into the trailer one of the soldiers says to the new soldier to wait until he sees what one soldier can do to another. This is highlighting the fact that the new soldier has no idea what goes on during a war. By the close up of the soldiers face after this is said, the audience can see that he is definitely not ready for any of this and perhaps he is not cut out to be a soldier.

3 Days to kill film trailer analysis

The trailer starts with an establishing shot of a city. This lets the audience know what kind of place the film is set in. We then see a close up shot of a man loading a gun. This automatically lets the audience know that there will be a lot of action involved. We are then shown three shots all at once on the screen showing different scenes. One is a close up of a man wearing dark sunglasses. Another one is a long shot of  a desk with computers and people standing around them and the last one is a mid shot of a blonde women. Whilst this is being shown a voice is saying 'This team will save thousands of lives'. This suggests to the audience that the three images we can see at the moment are the team that will save thousands. It also gives the audience the impression that this film has something to do with undercover work, particularly because of the man wearing dark sunglasses. Again, we see another three shots all at once. One is a close up of a pair of binoculars and we can see that someone is looking through them. Another is a mid shot of a man waist down holding a briefcase and the other is a long shot of people walking down a street. This still confirms the suspicion that this film has something to do with undercover work of some sort as the binoculars show that perhaps someone is being watched and the focus on the briefcase may have something to do with it. This all creates mystery for the audience. For the next part of the trailer we see a fairly old man completing what looks like a mission. As this part of the trailer begins the non- diegetic music gets slightly more sinister and fast paced. This is to put the audience on edge. We see a close up of the man attach something to the bottom of a car, he then reaches into his bag and puts on a gas mask. Through a mid shot we see him turn around and shoot a gun towards the direction of the camera. The non- diegetic music then gets more fast paced as the man who shot the gun is now taking off in a car and just as the audience expects a high speed car chase to occur the car which the man attached something to blows up. This then makes the audience on edge as they will want to know why this has happened and what is going on. For the next part of the trailer its clear that the man who we saw attaching something to the car does not want to do this anymore and that he wants to spend time with his family. However, it is obvious that it is not going to be as easy as it seems to just stop what he's doing. We see various long shots and close ups of him with his family. However we can see that perhaps there is some tension in the family. This could be because of his job as it is putting a strain on his family.
From the rest of the trailer the audience are made clear that even if he wants to stop working for them he can't. This is because they are offering him a drug which could potentially save his life and if he takes the drug he must continue his work. The non- diegetic music is speeding up just as the scenes are. We see mainly mid shots and long shots of action scenes. This is showing the audience that he has not given up his work and perhaps his family do not know this because of what his wife said earlier in the trailer - 'Are you done working for them?'.

Gimme Shelter film trailer analysis

The trailer begins with a series of close up shots of a girl cutting off her hair. The shots all last for less than a second. The dialogue that can be heard is of the girl whispering 'I'm ok' several times to herself. This scene is effective because it makes the audience awake that this girl is clearly troubled as she is telling herself she is ok as she is viciously cutting off her hair. This will then allow the audience to understand that clearly this girl is not ok and they will also want to find out why she is cutting off her hair and perhaps what has happened to her to make her act this way. A mid shot of the girl through the mirror is shown. This allows the audience to see her face and so see what she looks like. From the shot we can see that she looks quite grey in the face so perhaps she has not had enough sleep and she is not looking after herself properly. Her clothes also look quite rugged and dirty which could suggest to the audience that she doesn't have a lot of money and perhaps her parents don't look after her properly. We see a mid shot of the girl swiftly walking down a corridor which looks grimy and not a very nice place to stay. This also allows the audience to think that she doesn't come from a very nice background. A close up shot of the girl sitting in the backseat of a car allows the audience to see her facial expression. She is breathing heavily and looks slightly angry but at the same time we can tell she is quite sad. Shot-reverse-shot shows the girl and what we believe to be her mother. During this scene the mother is banging on the window shouting at her daughter 'You ain't going nowhere'. The way she is saying this shows the audience that perhaps the girl's mother is not very caring towards her at all which is why she is leaving her. The next shot is an over the shoulder shot and from this we can see that the girl is not looking at her mother but simply staring at the ground with an angry look on her face- perhaps because she feels so let down by her mother. The shot then returns back to her mother where she is now trying to show her daughter a bit of love by saying 'Hunny, Mummy loves you'. However, this does not seem genuine at all and by the expression on the girls face she doesn't believe it either as she now just seems sad rather than angry. The way the mother is tapping on the window when she says she loves her daughter could perhaps show the audience that she is doubtful and also that maybe she is on drugs because it seems as if she cannot control herself in a sense. We now see a close up of the girl in the car as the car has driven off and she is turning and looking at her mother standing in the distance and shouting at the girl. When she turns back around to the camera we can see that she has tears in her eyes and perhaps she does really love her mother but she knows its best if she moves on even if this decision is a very hard one for her to make.
For the next part of the trailer we hear the girl talking about her life and what has happened. She explains how her mother was arrested for drugs and that by the age of 12 she was in her tenth foster home. This makes the audience feel sorry for the girl as its clear that she has had an awful life and it is not her fault. We are then introduced to the girls father. We see him through a high angle over the shoulder shot. The use of this shot shows him to be weak and vulnerable compared to the girl. He is dressed in smart clothing and the surrounding seems extremely posh which suggests he is fairly wealthy. This, again, may make the audience feel sorry for the girl because she has had an awful life and it is clear that her dad has made a life for himself as it is clear he has money and he looks healthy.
For the rest of the trailer we get a good, clear idea of what she is going through. A close up shot of the girls face when she finds out she is pregnant shows that perhaps she is not entirely shocked and that maybe its what she wants. Maybe it is because she wants to be the mum she never had- a kind, caring and loving one. However, it is then made clear to the audience that people are not keen on the idea of her being a mother and they believe she is not ready for motherhood. A series of long shots and close up show her perhaps not coping as she is seen running away from everyone, dangerously driving in a car which leads to a car crash and her not accepting anyone's help. Near the end of the trailer we see the girl and her mother together. The mother, who we see from a mid shot, tells her daughter she deserves a second chance however when the shot switches to a close up of the girl we can see that perhaps she is not going to give her a second chance because so many chances have been given before. At the end of the trailer we see a two shot of the girl and what seems to be her new carer who says to her 'It's ok now'. This then links with the rest of the trailer where we see the girl looking much more clean and healthier.

Action film trailer analysis- The hunger Games: Mockingjay

An establishing shot opens the trailer. We can see a lot of industrial buildings and a hovercraft fly swiftly over the top of them. This sets the scene for the audience and allows them to understand what kind of palce it is.  We then see a long shot of three people sitting in a room. The man who is speaking looks quite laid back and in control. This is because he is leaning back on his chair and acting quite casual. In his dialogue he says 'listen to me'. This shows he is in control because he is giving the order to listen to him. It also shows the audience that perhaps he knows exactly what he is doing compared with other people who may not know as much as him. As their conversation continues we see images of Katniss, the girl they are talking about. The fact that they are showing Katniss whilst talking about her is allowing the audience to fully understand who she is. When the man talking says that Katniss is the follower we see a close up shot of a young girl looking up to what we expect to be Katniss. This shows the audience that she is an iconic figure because it seems as if people are reaching out to her and they need her in order to succeed. We then see a long shot of a fairly dark and grimy looking room filled with people of all ages. In the middle we can see a figure, Katniss, and everyone is walking towards her. You can just make out that she is carrying a bow in her hand and she has a pack of arrows on her back. This means that she is armed and they could be used to potentially kill. The fact that all those people in the room are walking towards her could show that they are in no way afraid of her and its almost like they need her. Straight after this scene the non- diegetic music gets faster and quite exciting. This is effective as it means that the audience may suspect something exciting is going to be shown so it will make them want to keep watching. The next scene we see is a long shot of the president. He is explaining how the mockingjay symbol is forbidden. This mockingjay symbol is Katniss. The effectiveness of this scene is that it allows the audience to realise that there will be people fighting against Katniss in order to keep to the presidents wishes. The next few scenes we see a lot of fighting going on which may lead the audience to believe that the majority of people are fighting against Katniss. However, the next scene we see a close up of a young looking boy, possibly around the age of 12, say to Katniss 'Are you fighting Katniss?'. When the audience hear this they may assume that it is only Katniss fighting and she has no support from anyone. However after a pause the boy continues with ' Are you here to fight with us?' to which she replies 'I am, I will'. This then shows the audience that Katniss does in fact have a lot of support and she is prepared to fight. This is effective becasuse it leaves the audience wanting to know what is going to happen and they will want to go on and see the film.
