Lucy Film Trailer Analysis

The trailer starts with a close up of a woman's face. She is lying down on a bed and her lip is bleeding. This will instantly make the audience wonder what has happened to her. As she begins to wake up we hear her voice say 'What happened?'. The next scene is a flashback of her in a club dancing. This could the make the audience think that she was drugged as she has no idea what happened and the fact she has woken up with hardly any clothes on. We are then told a story by a man who does not seem very relevant at this point about what has happened. This allows the audience to become awake of the story line and also it will make the rest of the trailer relevant. We then come to a scene in which a man beats up this woman to the extent that the bag of drugs contained in her stomach splits and the drugs get into her bloodstream. We can tell that this drug is very dangerous because from a long shot it looks as if she is having a seizure. Not only this but she has also been thrown to the ceiling which is completely abnormal. This then makes the audience wonder what is in the drug to make her act like this. Suddenly her eye opens and through the extreme close up we can see her eyes change colour a number of times as she blinks. Through a mid shot she then silently gets up and sits on her chair as if nothing has happened. But during the next scene the audience become awake that she is in fact extremely dangerous as she shoots a man without a thought. The next scene shows four men sitting quietly around a table. The woman walks up to them shouts 'Hey' and shoots them all. This would then give the audience the impression that she is dangerous as it seems that she is just killing for no reason now. This is again confirmed in the next scene when she asks two innocent looking men if they speak English. One replies with a simple no and she shoots him dead in an instant. This just shows that she is now just killing because she can. For the next part of the trailer we understand what is going on. We see a man explaining how most human only use about 10 per cent of their brain capacity. This could then lead the audience to believe that the woman is perhaps using more which is why she is unthinkingly committing these crimes. Further into the trailer we are told that the woman has access to 28 per cent of her brain capacity which is 18 per cent more than average humans. This would then lead the audience to understand that the drug has enhanced her access to her brain capacity. We then are shown clips of the film which show her using this extra brain capacity. This includes learning to write in Chinese in the space of an hour and also changing her hair colour and style in seconds. A man then asks what happens when her brain capacity reaches 100 per cent. The remainder of the trailer answers that question. We see her almost using super powers as she is able to stop time and speed it up again. This therefore shows the audience that this could be the result of being able to access 100 per cent of a brains capacity.
