Horror Film trailer- Willow Creek
The trailer starts with white writing on a black background. This is effective as it makes the writing stand out and also because they are using the colour black it could perhaps represent a sinister atmosphere to the rest of the film. It also sets the scene for the rest if the film as it is giving them an idea of what the film is about. The non-diegetic music playing in the background however is not scary and sinister music but almost sad music. This would perhaps not give the audience the feeling this film is entirely scary at this stage. For the next 19 seconds of the trailer we see a girlfriend and boyfriend going on a trip to the woods on search for big foot. After this the non-diegetic music changes to more mysterious and slightly faster paced. This is when we see a man saying that people go missing all the time in the forest. This would then lead the audience to believe that something sinister could be going on because it seems a bit strange how lots of people go missing rather than just one or two. As the trailer go on we see a man talking to the couple about the forest. As he is describing the forest the music is becoming more and more sinister. We then see a mid shot of the couple in a tent both looking extremely scared. This would perhaps give the audience the impression that they have heard something outside the tent. Just as this scene ends we hear the man shout to his girlfriend 'Kelly, come here!' he sounds quite worried which could give the audience the feeling that he has seen something. Later on in the trailer with the man still describing the forest we see Kelly telling her boyfriend to turn the camera off. This shows the audience that her attitude has changed from earlier on in the trailer from when the couple were both happy and excited. This means that perhaps something has happened that we are not aware of yet which has changed her attitude so much. This will make the audience wonder what has happened and it will make them want to carry on watching. We then hear the man describing the forest say that there are people living out in the woods who don't like other people. After this we then see the couple in the woods and the man see his sock in the tree and questions what it is doing up there. This would then give the audience a feeling that something else in in the forest with them. We are also shown a close up shot of the woman. From her facial expression we can tell that she is scared or worried about something. In the background of this shot we can just see darkness and the trees. On top of this scene we can hear the woman speaking saying 'people don't want us to come out here'. This could suggest to the audience that the woman has heard something and probably thinks its another person trying to scare them into leaving the forest. We then see the couple in the tent awake and they are talking in whispers. The woman explains she thinks people are just messing around with them which the man replies 'just go back to bed'. The fact that he has not answered to this could perhaps show to the audience that he is scared and doesn't know exactly what's going on . The screen then switches to complete darkness, perhaps to signify that they are not asleep. We then hear the diegetic sound of a twig breaking, perhaps because someone has stepped on it and broken it. After they are both awake and listening carefully to the surroundings the sound of a whimpering cry can be heard. The woman acknowledges this and has a look of complete fear on her face. As this is happening the non- diegetic music is getting louder and louder until it all of a sudden gets higher pitched and slightly faster paced. We then see lots of different clips of them screaming and running through the darkness of the woods until the music stops suddenly and we can see the film title appear. In the background of this we can hear the diegetic sound of the woman. She is screaming horrifically and it sounds like she is in an uncontrollable amount of pain. This is the last thing the audience hear. It is very effective because it will leave the audience completely startled as to what is happened which will make them want to go and watch the full film.
