The Maze Runner film trailer analysis

The trailer begins with a birds eye view of a teenage boy in what looks like a lift. He is on all fours which could suggest to the audience that he does not want to be in the lift and that he isn't too sure where he is or where he is going. We then see a mid shot of him crouching and he has his arms up perhaps with fear. Also, the setting is dark and it seems as if he is trapped in some kind of cage. This means that the audience will suspect something bad to happen because there is nothing in the setting that would suggest a happy ending. Also, there is a mix of non-diegetic sound and diegetic sound. The non- diegetic sound is of the music. The music is almost like a screeching sound which gets louder and louder and the cage gets higher. The diegetic music is of the cage rattling. This suggests that the cage is moving at quite a speed. Also because of the amount of rattling it could suggest that the teenage boy in the cage is not comfortable. As the cage reaches the top we can hear the diegetic sound of him breathing fast and heavily, perhaps because he is panicing. We then see a low angle shot of the top of the cage doors sliding open and a group of people waiting. The use of this low angle shot is to show the audience who holds more power. To the audience it will come across that the boy in the cage is looking up to them, so therefore they hold more power. The next shot is a high angle shot of the boy in the cage. The shot makes it look like the other people are looking down on him as if he is less important than them. The shot then switches back to a low angle shot and we see another boy of the same age jump down into the cage. This again makes it look like he is in total control. A high angle shot of the boy sitting down in the cage is shown. He is looking upwards towards the boy with a very scared look on his face. A close up shot of the boy who just jumped into the cage is shown. However, by his facial expression they audience can see that he does not seem to be aggressive in any way. He almost seems to be acting friendly to the boy in the cage which could make the audience very confused as to what is going on.
We are then shown a mid shot of the boy who was in the cage. The camera is circling to boy therefore allowing the audience to see the surroundings. Whilst this is going on we hear someone say, presumably the boy, 'what is this place?'. This links with what we are being shown because we as the audience are getting an idea of what kind of place it is. From the next few shots and the diegetic sounds we hear it's obvious that these people have been put here and they don't know why. For the next bit of the trailer we see different shots of this maze. We see birds eye views of the maze so the audience can get an idea of how big it is. We also see a long shot of all the people who have been put into this place. This may make the audience think because they will wonder why not that many people have been put here and if they were put here for a reason. We then see a long shot of the doors to the maze closing and over the top of this we hear a voice explaining that no one has survived a night in the maze. We then see a close up of the boy who had recently arrived say 'What happens to them?'. As this shot is a close up the audience are able to see the boys facial expression clearly. He looks worried but at the same time very interested. We are then shown a scene a couple of seconds long where someone, who has entered the maze, has come across something deadly. We can tell this is something deadly because of the music we hear and the screams. We hear something that sounds like vines being ripped from the ground and the screams of a boy who has just been torn from the ground. The next shot is an establishing shot. We can see two boys walking through the maze. However the maze looks much more complicated than expected. There are massive stone walls everywhere. This may make the audience wonder what kind of maze it is and what will happen to the maze runners once they enter the maze.
Later on in the trailer we are shown a two- shot of the new boy and the other boy that jumped into the cage with him. He is saying in a worried voice to the new boy that everything has changed since he turned up. This then links to the next shot. It is a birds eye view of a person lying down in the cage, so it would seem to the audience that a new 'maze runner' has turned up. Someone then says 'Its a girl'. However, he says this in a confused way as there has never been a girl before. This links with what was said before about how everything has changed since he turned up. This could give the audience the idea that it has something to do with the boy. A high angle shot then shows the girl awake and say 'Thomas!'. By the look on her face it is clear that she knows thomas well and she is extremely glad he is here. For the remainder of the trailer we see lots of different shots from people inside the maze. From the dialogue the audience are made awake that the new girl and boy who arrived have something different about them which could change everything. We then see shots of them inside the maze so it could show that they are going to be the ones to perhaps find a way out of the maze. Right at the end of the trailer we see a long shot of all of the maze runners standing at the start of the maze as we see the huge, concrete doors sliding shut. As this scene is playing we hear a voice over the top saying 'I need to know that you're going to follow the rules'. Just as this has been said we see Thomas run through the doors that are getting closer and closer together. However, the trailer ends just before the audience gets to see if thomas makes it or not. This would leave the audience really curious as to what happens and perhaps they would wonder if the girl is trapped inside the maze and he has gone in to save her. This will make the audience want to go and watch the film so they can find out what happens.
